DEHRADUN: Pithoragarh district was hit by a snow storm on Wednesday post midnight. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), New Delhi had issued a warning about possible avalanche in the region. While no loss of life was reported, the district authorities were trying to reach out to remote villages.

The area around Panchchuli glacier near Munsiyari was most affected by the storm. Residents of Lutham, Papdi, Dhopa, Faliyati and Ugrali villages faced long power cuts and had to remain indoors for over four hours. The district officials said that the intensity of the storm was not high, but a few villagers have lost the thatched roofs of their houses.

Confirming the development, Hari Chandra Semwal, district magistrate of Pithoragarh, said: "The warning had been issued on Sunday saying that an avalanche is possible within next 24 hours. We had given an alert in the whole district earlier and that is why no damage has been reported."
