Dehradun: Ruling Congress in Uttarakhand on Monday pitched for making Gairsain in Chamoli district the permanent state capital and sought Rs 1,000 crore package from the Centre for its creation.

State Congress president Kishore Upadhyay demanded that the Centre enact a legislation to make Gairsain the permanent capital.

During a press conference here, Upadhyay said that he will talk to Chief Minister Harish Rawat regarding the same.

Notably, Legislative Assembly and secretariat are under construction at Bharadisain in Gairsain although the state government has not yet clarified its stand on the issue.

Attacking BJP, a day after the visit of party president Amit Shah, the Congress leader alleged, "The party has trapped the state in the capital issue.

"After Uttarakhand was constituted in 2000, BJP made an issue of the state capital and made Dehradun the interim capital."

To resolve the capital issue, the previous state governments had constituted Dixit Commission which submitted its report in 2008.

The report had disfavoured Gairsain as permanent state capital over availability of land among other issues and approved Dehradun.

However, the report was put on the back burner.
