Dehradun: 30 July, 2015
Minister for School Education Mantri Prasad Naithani called upon the Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Smriti Irani, on Wednesday to press upon her to release funds for reconstruction and repair of schools damaged during the 2013 floods.
He also raised the issue of enhancing Central assistance so that the Centre-state ratio of assistance became 90:10 instead of 75:25.
The minister said in Uttarakhand the schools played a dual role of providing children room to study and acting as places of refuge during natural disasters.
“It is very important that these school buildings are fit. Due to paucity of funds, we have not been able to repair the damaged schools,” he said.
During the meeting, Naithani also apprised Irani about the problems faced by the School Education Department due to lack of funds. “So far, we have not received any funds sanctioned by the government under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) for 2014-2015. A total of Rs 86.17 crore was sanctioned for 2014-2015 under the programme but the Central Government has not released the full amount. For the past three months, we have not been able to pay the salaries of the employees as the remaining share of Rs 10.17 crore has not been released,” said Naithani.
