With the trust of parents in government schools receding, 59 primary schools have been shut down in Almora for want of students.
Along with this, nearly 273 other schools are on the verge of being shut down for the similar reasons.
The situation has become so alarming that even the 26 junior high schools may be shut down due to lack of students.
With the closing of government schools, the private run schools have made their presence felt.

The government that has invested money and material in building schools will soon be reduced to ruins.
Meanwhile, the education officials have skirted the issue saying they are trying to increase registration of students.
There are schools in the villages with three teachers over five students.
