Social activists under the banner of the Devbhoomi Social Club today staged a protest at the Municipal Corporation office demanding a complete ban on the sale and usage of polythene bags in the city, particularly at Har-ki-Pauri and Ganga ghats.
They said the holy river of the Ganga was being polluted by the dumping of polythene material in the river.
President of the club Ram Gopal Gupta said strict action be taken against those found throwing such material in the river. The protesters said penalty should be imposed on traders using polythene bags.
They have written to District Magistrate Harish Chand Semwal, Mayor Manoj Garg and Mukhya Nagar Adhikari Vipra Trivedi in this regard.
Club member Yogendra Rathi said anti-polythene drives were conducted in the past also, but they failed to evoke the desired results in the absence of support from traders, teerth purohits, local people and pilgrims.
Ravindra Motela, Sher Singh,Raj Pal Arya, Sumit Singhal, Sandeep,Gun Bahadur Chauhan, Gyanendra Pundit, Shyam Singh,Dheeraj, Tarun Mandal, Pawan, Siya Saran Yadav, Rajneesh Maurya, Girish Aggarwal, JP Badoni, Ajay Gupta, Prahlad Singh and RCP Sharma were prominent among the protesters.
