Asha workers angry over a health department official's "misbehaviour", around 9500 ASHA (accredited social health activist) workers have threatened to launch a state-wide strike.

ASHA workers play a significant role in the health sector in Uttarakhand as they keep a tab on mother and child healthcare facilities. As per the allegations of the chairperson of ASHA workers' body, Shiva Dubey, the workers who have been seeking an increment in honorarium and bonus for last six years, were outrightly denied the same by top health officials.

Some of the health workers said that chief minister Harish Rawat had assured them that a formal government order will be passed on their demand and the recent rejection was "shockingly unexpected".

Moreover, one of their team members, Ram Singh Bhandari, was "rudely" sent out of the room during a meeting. The ASHA workers have refused to take such "insult". TOI
