Kumaon University will soon become the first institution in the region to offer a course in filmmaking. The university has entered into an agreement with Pune-based Film and Television Institute of India for starting a six-month certificate program from this academic session under the guidance FTII members.

University vice chancellor HS Dhami told TOI, "As per the agreement, seven FTII faculty members will be visiting here to teach students. The course details will be put up on our website soon." Members of the university administration said that the course duration may be increased if they get a good response from students.

Meanwhile, artistes from the region have welcomed the development. They said that in the absence of proper guidance and training, Uttarakhand had stopped producing talents like Nirmal Pandey, Prasoon Joshi, Hemant Pandey and Sudhir Pandey. Idris Malik, an actor and filmmaker from Nainital who won an award for his film Ye Admi in March 2015 at the 7th Nashik International Film Festival, said that such an initiative will encourage budding artistes in the state. "It is good to know that a course in filmmaking will be offered at Kumaon University. This will enable many aspiring artistes to sharpen their skills which will eventually help them in fulfilling their dreams," he said.
"I hope the initiative will be a hit among the aspiring artistes of the state," Zahoor Alam, a senior theatre artiste, said. NDTV
