49 Indian institutes have made the list in Times Higher Education’s prestigious ‘Emerging Economics University Ranking’  this year. Of these 25 institutes have been successful in making the place in the top 200. India’s  Institute of Science is ranked 14th, while IIT Bombay has been ranked 27th. Although both the institutions have moved back by one place this year, the main reason being the growing competition.
According to Times Higher Education (THE), India has increased its representation in the ranking as well as in the list of 49 institutions this year compared to 42 institutions in 2018. IIT Roorkee has made a long jump of 21 places and has made it to the top 40 institutes. Now it has reached number 35. IIT Indore is 61st, while JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research jointly secured 64th position.

However, both Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and Amrita University have made it to the Top 150 this year. Savitri Bai Phule University of Pune jointly secured 93th position, jumping 87 places.

IIT Hyderabad included for the first time

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune and IIT Hyderabad have been included in this list for the first time. THE Global ranking editor Ellie Bothwell said that Indian institutions have immense potential of success, they are progressing not only on the emerging platform but also at the global level.

List dominated by Chinese Institutions

China’s universities have dominated this year’s list. There are 72 institutes in China featuring in the list. Shingua University has achieved top position, while in the top five, four institutions are from China. In the ranking of 2019, about 450 universities from 43 countries of four continents have got place.
